Here is a question: Why does Apple® QuickTime® always have to install an icon in my system tray? I go through the preferences every time I install iTunes® (QuickTime gets installed with iTunes every time you update) and uncheck the little box that says "Install QuickTime icon in system tray" under the "Advanced" tab, but that preference never seems to get carried over from update to update.
If I really need to do something QuickTime related, like entering in my "Pro" license key, I will go through the Control Panel and use the QuickTime icon there. There is absolutely no reason to have that icon in my system tray. It never gets used and just takes up space. The only icons in the system tray should be system notifications and application I tell to minimize to the system tray.
Removing the Tray Icon
For those of you looking to remove the QuickTime icon from your system tray:
- Right-click the QuickTime icon in the system tray
- Select "QuickTime Preferences" from the popup menu
- Click on the "Advanced" tab in the QuickTime Preferences window
- Uncheck the "Install QuickTime icon in system tray" option
- Click "Apply". The icon should disappear from the system tray
- Click "OK" to exit the QuickTime Preferences window
That's all there is to it. If you followed the steps above, you should be free of the QuickTime icon in the system tray... At least until the next time you install QuickTime or iTunes.
